Who run the world? "Girls" (and "Broad City")

In early January 2015, the wait for fans of the HBO series Girls ended. Now in its fourth season, the show has been named less “appealing.” But how appealing was it to see Lena Dunham naked on your TV screen to begin with?

One of the most controversial topics surrounding Girls is the amount of sex and nudity. Yeah I said it; we all knew it was coming. Lena Dunham, creator and star of the series, is known for constantly being in the nude. Every Monday after the show airs at nine p.m. on Sunday, there is an article about the previous night’s racy scenes. And, out of the four “girls,” Dunham is probably the last one we want to see in that state (sorry girlfriend). Viewers have said its material has declined, and I cannot disagree no matter how much I love the show. Maybe it’s because they’ve run out of scandalous poses and risqué sex scenes to show? Sometimes when the show is over, you’re like “did they really just go there?” Yeah, they did.

The premise of the show is four girls in their mid twenties living in New York, trying to sort out their lives, complaining about boys, and living off of their parents money.

Now, who are the girls? First is Hannah, played by Dunham. She is a self-involved aspiring writer with no filter, which makes for some entertaining scenes. Allison Williams, who was Peter Pan in the recent NBC show, plays Marnie. She always thought she had a set plan for the rest of her life, but it deteriorates as the show goes on, and now she is lost and trying to make a singing career for herself. Jessa is the wild one of the group, played by Jemima Kirke. She is a British free spirit who has just gotten out of rehab. Some people admire her easygoing attitude but some despise her. Last is my favorite, Shoshanna, played by Zosia Mamet. She is youngest of the group, a brutally honest camp girl, hair icon, and recent graduate of NYU.

Fans of TV shows are always looking to identify with the characters, and one of the things I love about this show is how the wide variety of personality traits allows for many opportunities to connect with the “girls.” Although the show has declined slightly in quality, I’ll remain a loyal fan this new season, because I love the quirky four and their entertaining, relatable antics. Tune in to figure out which Girls character you’re most like!
