Page Turners, a new and exciting group at LM, is on the rise. The purpose of Page Turners is to explore, discuss, and dissect literature with peers, similar to a book club. LM librarian Pam McGlone created the group hoping to gather a closely-knit group of roughly ten students who have a passion for reading. Members meet once every two weeks to talk about the assigned text. Examples of books Page Turners read are The Help and Jumped. Although McGlone and other instructional aids help moderate and direct discussion, the group is mostly student-run. Charter members—two-year members of the group—remind new members that they are expected to take initiative and keep up with the assigned reading. Charter Members are experienced with the dynamics of the club and are expected to lead and help other members of the group with their reading.

McGlone appreciates when students approach her with young adult books they would like to read. For example, Page Turners members asked if Divergent by Veronica Roth would be an acceptable book for discussion. The library purchased ten copies of the book and the students were thrilled. “We want the students to enjoy their reading, and make new connections that they otherwise would not have made,” says McGlone.

Reading texts like The Help gives members perspective and force us to deal with real life moral issues. Hence, being involved with this group has not only made me a better writer, but also a better individual and the man I intend to become.
